Communication skills with children in paediatric anaesthesia: challenges while wearing a face mask
1Department of Anaesthesia, Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin, Dublin, Ireland.
Insights
Effective communication with children is crucial, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic with mask-wearing. Anaesthesiology consultants demonstrate strong skills to build rapport and cooperation, improving outcomes for hospitalized children.
Area of Science:
- Medical communication
- Pediatric healthcare
Background:
- The COVID-19 pandemic and widespread mask usage have underscored the importance of effective communication with children.
- Anaesthesiology consultants possess strong communication skills that foster rapid rapport and patient cooperation.
- Positive interactions are vital for hospitalized children, correlating with improved healthcare outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight the importance of communication skills in pediatric healthcare, particularly in the context of mask-wearing.
- To examine the communication techniques used by anaesthesiology consultants.
- To address challenges faced by trainees in communicating with children.
Main Methods:
- Review of communication strategies employed by anaesthesiology consultants.
- Analysis of the impact of mask-wearing on doctor-patient communication.
- Identification of key communication techniques for interacting with children.
Main Results:
- Anaesthesiology consultants exhibit excellent communication skills beneficial for pediatric patients.
- Effective communication enhances rapport and cooperation in hospitalized children.
- Mask-wearing presents unique challenges to communication with children, requiring specific techniques.
Conclusions:
- Mastering communication techniques is essential for healthcare professionals interacting with children.
- Specialized skills are needed to ensure effective communication in environments where face masks are common.
- Improving communication strategies can lead to better healthcare experiences and outcomes for pediatric patients.
Abstract:
Effective communication with children is a skill, the importance of which is especially highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ubiquitous wearing of face masks. Anaesthesiology consultants have been shown to display excellent communication skills that facilitate the development of rapid rapport and patient cooperation. Good communication results in positive interactions for hospitalised children, which correlates with improved healthcare outcomes. However, interactions with a child aren't always straightforward, particularly for trainees unfamiliar with certain communication techniques, which are important to use at a time when when the wearing of face masks is commonplace.

Administering Oxygen by Mask
Administering oxygen by mask is a common nursing intervention that provides supplemental oxygen to patients with respiratory distress or chronic lung conditions. This procedure involves delivering oxygen at a specified rate through a face mask connected to an oxygen source.
Equipment
The equipment necessary for this procedure includes:
Oxygen Delivering System I: Nasal Cannula and Face Mask
Nasal Cannula
A nasal cannula is a lightweight tube split at one end into two prongs and placed in the nostrils. It is typically used to deliver low to medium levels of oxygen.
Suggested flow rate: The suggested flow rate for a nasal cannula typically ranges between 1 and 6 L/min.

Tracheostomy Care I: Pre-procedural Steps
Required Equipment
The equipment necessary for tracheostomy care includes:
Oxygen Delivering System II: Venturi Mask and Transtracheal Oxygen
Venturi Mask
The Venturi mask, named after the Venturi effect, is designed to deliver precise oxygen concentrations. It consists of a large tube with an oxygen inlet that narrows down, causing a pressure drop that pulls air in through adjustable side ports. The mask is a lightweight,...
