Summary

Biliary calculi formation due to hemobilia is rare. Blood clots in the gallbladder need about six months to form these calculi, requiring patient observation for this complication.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Hepatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Hemobilia, or bleeding into the biliary tree, can lead to rare complications.
  • Biliary calculi (gallstones) formation is an uncommon sequela of hemobilia.

Observation:

  • This report details two cases of biliary calculi formation secondary to hemobilia.
  • Literature review indicates only four such cases documented globally.

Findings:

  • Biliary calculi formed from hemobilia exhibit distinct characteristics in vitro, CT scans, and cholecystography.
  • Calculi formation requires blood clots to persist in the gallbladder for approximately six months, allowing encrustation by bile constituents.

Implications:

  • Patients experiencing hemobilia with gallbladder blood clots are at risk of developing biliary calculi.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical observation for this rare complication is crucial in managing patients with hemobilia.
