Background:

  • Cardiac rehabilitation aims to reduce repeat cardiac events by encouraging physical activity.
  • However, low physical activity and high sedentary behavior persist during and after cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Smartphone apps offer potential for reducing sedentary behavior, but few studies have explored this in cardiac rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of the Vire smartphone app and ToDo-CR web program for decreasing sedentary behavior in cardiac rehabilitation patients.
  • To assess recruitment rates, follow-up, app usability, and objectively measured sedentary behavior.

Main Methods:

  • A single-center, pre-post study involving 20 cardiac rehabilitation participants.
  • Intervention included the Vire app, Fitbit Flex, and a 6-week ToDo-CR program.
  • Feasibility assessed via recruitment/follow-up rates, usability (UTAUT2), and sedentary behavior (ActiGraph).

Main Results:

  • 20 participants (85% male, mean age 54) were recruited; 28% were excluded for not having a smartphone.
  • High follow-up rates at 6 weeks (95%) and 16 weeks (60%).
  • Medium effect size for reduction in daily sedentary behavior over 16 weeks (Cohen d=0.54).

Conclusions:

  • A behavioral smartphone app intervention to reduce sedentary time is feasible in cardiac rehabilitation.
  • The Vire app and ToDo-CR program show potential for decreasing sitting time.
  • A larger randomized controlled trial is recommended to establish effectiveness.
