This study compared agricultural workers to the general population in rural Puerto Rico. Agricultural workers had lower rates of hypertensive disease but higher rates of cerebrovascular disease and dorsopathy.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Public Health
- Agricultural Medicine
Background:
- Agricultural workers face occupational and environmental exposures linked to adverse health outcomes.
- Limited data exists on the health status and characteristics of agricultural workers in Puerto Rico.
- Understanding these disparities is crucial for targeted health interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the health status and characteristics of agricultural workers with the general population in rural Puerto Rico.
- To identify potential differences in health outcomes between farmworkers and non-farmworkers.
- To inform the development of health frameworks for agricultural workers in Puerto Rico.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study analyzing medical records from Hospital General Castañer (2012-2016).
- Inclusion of agricultural workers and non-agricultural workers from Lares, Puerto Rico.
- Description of demographic/socioeconomic profiles and evaluation of health variable relationships.
Main Results:
- Agricultural workers showed a lower prevalence of hypertensive disease (69.4%) compared to non-agricultural workers (21% less likely).
- A higher prevalence of cerebrovascular disease (3.4%) was observed in agricultural workers.
- Prevalence of arthritis (4.0%) and dorsopathy (48.8%) were reported among agricultural workers.
Conclusions:
- The study provides insights into the health and demographic characteristics of agricultural workers in central Puerto Rico.
- Findings can guide the development of health strategies supporting agricultural workers and the industry.
- Further research is needed to define exposed agricultural worker populations and farming communities in Puerto Rico.
