    Background:

    • Epidemiological studies on depression and heart failure (HF) risk have yielded inconsistent findings.
    • Previous research has not definitively established a quantitative link between depression and the incidence of HF.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively estimate the relative effect of depression on the development of incident heart failure (HF).
    • To synthesize evidence from multiple cohort studies to provide a more robust understanding of the depression-HF association.

    Main Methods:

    • A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies were conducted.
    • Studies published between 1950 and 2019 were identified from PubMed, Embase, and Science Citation Index.
    • Pooled hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using a random-effects model for 6 eligible studies.

    Main Results:

    • Six studies involving 131,282 participants and 4,727 HF events were included.
    • Individuals with depression exhibited a 23% increased risk of developing HF (pooled hazard ratio, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.08-1.41).
    • No significant heterogeneity was observed among the included studies (I² = 35.5%).

    Conclusions:

    • Published literature confirms a significant association between depression and increased HF incidence in the general population.
    • Depression should be considered a risk factor for the development of heart failure.
