Summary

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, was not found to be an independent risk factor for rotator cuff tears in this study. The prevalence of sarcopenia was similar in patients with and without rotator cuff tears.

Background:

  • Sarcopenia is characterized by age-related loss of muscle mass and function, increasing risks for falls, fractures, and mortality.
  • Rotator cuff tears can be associated with systemic conditions like diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and osteoporosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential correlation between the prevalence of sarcopenia and the occurrence of rotator cuff tears.
  • To determine if sarcopenia is an independent risk factor for rotator cuff tears.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective case-control study involving 106 patients (53 with rotator cuff tears, 53 controls) aged 71-72 years.
  • Sarcopenia diagnosis based on low muscle mass, strength, and physical performance criteria.
  • Rotator cuff integrity assessed via magnetic resonance imaging.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in baseline demographics or sarcopenia prevalence between the rotator cuff tear group and the control group.
