Abstract:
Prevention of early prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) depends on rational perioperative antibiotics and early aggressive treatment of wound infections. Successful treatment depends on rapid recognition and treatment and valve re-replacement in most instances. Late PVE caused by sensitive organisms can usually be cured by medical treatment provided paraprosthetic abscess formation has not caused valve dehiscence.
