Friction: Problem Solving01:21

Friction: Problem Solving

406
Friction is an essential force that influences the motion of objects in daily life. Depending on the situation, it can be either beneficial or problematic. Consider a bus with a mass of three megagrams and its center of mass at a specific point, moving along a banked road at a constant speed. The coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road is 0.5. Find the maximum angle of the banked road at which the bus would not slip or tip.

Stability of structures01:14

Stability of structures

367
In mechanical engineering, the stability of systems under various forces is critical for designing durable and efficient structures. One fundamental way to explore these concepts is by analyzing systems like two rods connected at a pivot point, O, with a torsional spring of spring constant k at the pivot point. This system is similar in appearance to a scissor jack used to change tires on a car. In this case, the arms of the linkage (equivalent to the rods in this system) are entirely vertical,...

Root-Locus Method

348
A cruise control system in a car is designed to maintain a specified speed automatically by adjusting the gas pedal. The system continuously measures the vehicle's speed and makes fine adjustments to the pedal to achieve this goal. The root locus method is particularly useful for understanding how the cruise control system's behavior changes under varying conditions, such as when the car goes uphill, downhill, or faces strong wind resistance.
This system can be represented by a block...

Rolling Resistance: Problem Solving01:17

Rolling Resistance: Problem Solving

655
Rolling resistance, also known as rolling friction, is the force that resists the motion of a rolling object, such as a wheel, tire, or ball, when it moves over a surface. It is caused by the deformation of the object and the surface in contact with each other, as well as other factors like internal friction, hysteresis, and energy losses within the materials. Rolling resistance opposes the object's motion, requiring additional energy to overcome it and maintain movement. In practical...

Stability of Equilibrium Configuration: Problem Solving

824
The stability of equilibrium configurations is an important concept in physics, engineering, and other related fields. In simple terms, it refers to the tendency of an object or system to return to its equilibrium position after being disturbed. The stability of an equilibrium configuration can be analyzed by considering the potential energy function of the system and examining its behavior near the equilibrium point.

Three-Dimensional Force System:Problem Solving01:30

Three-Dimensional Force System:Problem Solving

1.2K
A three-dimensional force system refers to a scenario in which three forces act simultaneously in three different directions. This type of problem is commonly encountered in physics and engineering, where it is necessary to calculate the resultant force on the system, which can then be used to predict or analyze the behavior of the object or structure under consideration.
To solve a three-dimensional force system, first resolve each force into its respective scalar components. Do this using...

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Human Movement Science
  • Motor Control

Background:

  • Stair descent presents dynamic stability challenges for young adults.
  • The impact of concurrent cognitive tasks, like texting, on stair descent stability is not well understood, especially concerning gait velocity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of a concurrent text-based math task on dynamic stability during stair descent.
  • To analyze how gait velocity influences stability control under texting and non-texting conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-six participants completed stair descents under texting and no-texting conditions at self-selected speeds.
  • Kinematic and kinetic data were captured using motion capture and force platforms.
  • Repeated measures ANCOVA and Wilcoxon signed rank test analyzed differences, with gait velocity as a covariate.

Main Results:

  • Texting during stair descent led to increased sagittal margin of stability at right-foot-landing.
  • Step cadence, double-support duration, and sagittal/frontal joint moments and angles were significantly altered.
  • Impaired sagittal and frontal stability control was observed, despite reduced step cadence.

Conclusions:

  • Concurrent texting significantly compromises dynamic stability during stair descent in young adults.
  • Joint adjustment strategies in the sagittal plane (knee, ankle) and frontal plane (hip) were modified due to texting interference.
  • Minimizing texting behavior while navigating stairs is recommended to enhance safety and stability.
