COVID-19 testing in Massachusetts showed increasing misalignment with epidemic intensity. Vulnerable communities faced greater testing gaps, risking intensified outbreaks.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Equity

Background:

  • Early severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) testing limitations hindered transmission control.
  • Improvements in SARS-CoV-2 testing infrastructure created an opportunity to reassess testing alignment with epidemic intensity.

Conclusions:

  • Despite equity goals, SARS-CoV-2 testing resources were disproportionately allocated to affluent communities in Massachusetts.
  • Structural inequities in testing access exacerbate the risk of intense COVID-19 waves, particularly in vulnerable populations.
  • Addressing these inequities is crucial for effective epidemic control.
