This study reveals a trade-off between poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. Increasing poverty lowers the ecological footprint, while a larger ecological footprint can alleviate poverty.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Economics
- Sustainable Development
Background:
- Poverty reduction and environmental sustainability are critical global challenges.
- Environmental impact often constrains poverty alleviation and sustainable development efforts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the complex relationship between poverty and ecological footprint.
- To analyze how these factors influence environmental sustainability and development.
Main Methods:
- Utilized time-series data from 2010-2016.
- Employed the Driscoll-Kray regression estimator to account for cross-country dependencies, heteroscedasticity, and autocorrelation.
Main Results:
- A rise in poverty was found to reduce the ecological footprint, impacting environmental sustainability.
- Conversely, an increase in the ecological footprint was observed to decrease poverty levels.
- A significant trade-off exists between poverty and ecological footprint.
Conclusions:
- Environmental degradation, measured by ecological footprint, has a complex interplay with poverty reduction.
- Policies must consider the interconnectedness of economic well-being and environmental impact for sustainable development.
