Summary

Brain connectivity in the default mode network (DMN) predicts mind wandering (MW). This study shows stable DMN functional connectivity is linked to individual differences in MW, suggesting a trait-based nature.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Mind wandering (MW) is a shift of attention from external tasks to internal thoughts.
  • Previous studies linked resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) within the default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal control network (FPCN) to MW, but predictive capacity remained unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether brain functional connectivity longitudinally predicts mind wandering.
  • To clarify the relationship between DMN/FPCN functional connectivity and individual variations in MW.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study with 122 participants undergoing three MRI scans over two years.
  • Simultaneous self-reported MW scales collected at each time point.
  • Analysis of static and dynamic functional connectivity within DMN and FPCN.

Main Results:

  • 16 functional connections involving DMN and FPCN consistently associated with MW across time.
  • Significant cross-lagged effects found between DMN-involved connections and subsequent MW frequency.
  • Lower DMN functional connectivity (FC-DMN) observed in individuals with low stable MW compared to moderate increasing and high stable groups.

Conclusions:

  • Brain functional connectivity, particularly within the DMN, longitudinally predicts subsequent mind wandering.
  • Findings support the trait-based nature of mind wandering.
  • DMN functional connectivity is a stable predictor of individual differences in mind wandering.
