Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Computational Neuroscience

Background:

  • Creative idea generation involves complex neural network interactions.
  • Brain signal complexity (BSC) measures temporal dynamics of neural activity.
  • Previous studies explored BSC during creative tasks but not differentiating typical vs. original associations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if multiscale entropy (MSE) of electroencephalography (EEG) signals can differentiate brain states during typical versus original verbal association production.
  • To assess if MSE is a sensitive neural marker for individual differences in producing original verbal associations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis on electroencephalography (EEG) signals.
  • Measured MSE during verbal divergent thinking (DT) tasks focusing on typical and original associations.
  • Analyzed data from 92 young adults.

Main Results:

  • Slightly higher average MSE for original associations at frontal electrodes (small/medium timescales).
  • Slightly higher average MSE for typical associations at parietal electrodes (higher timescales).
  • Individual differences in MSE were highly correlated between typical and original association conditions, failing to show specificity.

Conclusions:

  • Multiscale entropy (MSE) shows potential as a marker for creative verbal association states.
  • The study did not find MSE to be a specific neural marker for individual differences in originality.
  • Further research and replications are needed to clarify brain-behavior relationships in creativity.
