Summary

Early interventions show promise for improving parental reflective functioning (PRF) and reducing infant disorganised attachment. While PRF improvements were not statistically significant, relational interventions effectively reduced attachment disorganisation in toddlers.

Background:

Parental reflective functioning (PRF) is a key factor in infant attachment development.
Dyadic interventions aim to improve parent-infant/toddler relationships, with some targeting PRF directly.
A comprehensive meta-analytic review of these interventions' impact on PRF is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of dyadic interventions for parents of infants and toddlers.
To assess the impact of these interventions on parental reflective functioning (PRF).
To examine secondary outcomes including attachment security, parent-infant interaction, and parental distress.

Main Methods:

Systematic review and meta-analysis of dyadic intervention studies.
Searched key electronic databases up to October 2018.
Synthesized data from six studies involving 521 participants using meta-analysis.

Main Results:

A non-significant moderate improvement in PRF was observed in intervention groups (SMD: -0.46).
A significant reduction in disorganised attachment was found (Risk Ratio: 0.50).
No significant effects were found for attachment security, parent-infant interaction, parental depression, or global distress.

Conclusions:

Relational early interventions demonstrate potential benefits for enhancing parental reflective functioning.
These interventions appear effective in reducing the prevalence of disorganised attachment in young children.
Further research is needed, particularly subgroup analyses comparing different intervention types.
