Background:

Harsh parenting negatively impacts child development and behavior, increasing violence.
Parent training programs are effective but have limited reach.
Community mobilization can extend intervention reach through social networks.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess if a community-based parent training intervention increased positive parenting.
To explore changes in female caregivers' social networks (selection).
To determine if parenting behavior spread through social connections (socialization).

Main Methods:

Social network analysis was used to study 235 "Colored" Afrikaans-speaking female caregivers in rural South Africa.
Data were collected in two waves (2016 and 2017).
Statistical controls included psychiatric morbidity, parenting stress, alcohol misuse, and child's age.

Main Results:

Community-wide increases in positive parenting behaviors (involvement, supervision, consistent discipline, reduced corporal punishment) were observed.
Attending parent training sessions predicted increased network centrality (outdegree and indegree).
Caregivers adopted parenting behaviors from connected individuals, particularly those who attended training.

Conclusions:

The intervention successfully spread positive parenting information throughout the community via social interactions.
Community mobilization and social networks were key to the intervention's impact.
Social network analysis is valuable for understanding intervention dissemination processes.
