Psycholinguistic mechanisms of classifier processing in sign language

Sign language classifiers, which are highly iconic, are processed as linguistic verbs, not gestures. This study used electroencephalogram (EEG) to show that unusual sentence structures increase cognitive load, supporting their linguistic status.
