Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biometrics
  • Signal Processing

Background:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are increasingly utilized for personal identification.
  • The aperiodic component of the power spectrum shows promise as a robust EEG feature for biometrics.
  • Investigating EEG features in naturalistic settings is crucial for real-world applications.

Discussion:

  • This study explores the efficacy of EEG aperiodic spectral components for subject-specific identification during naturalistic stimuli (film viewing).
  • The research analyzes two publicly available datasets to validate the findings.
  • The aperiodic component's offset and exponent parameters are evaluated for their subject-discriminating capabilities.

Key Insights:

  • Aperiodic EEG spectral components successfully capture subject-specific features.
  • Performance in identifying subjects is significantly higher with naturalistic stimuli compared to resting-state.
  • This suggests naturalistic stimuli facilitate more effective EEG-based biometric identification.

Outlook:

  • The findings advocate for a paradigm shift towards naturalistic stimuli in evaluating EEG biometric systems.
  • Future research could explore diverse naturalistic scenarios and advanced signal processing techniques.
  • This approach may lead to more accurate and reliable brain-computer interfaces and security systems.
