COVID-19 and Digestive System in Children: A Retrospective Study

COVID-19 in children rarely causes severe gastrointestinal issues. While some children showed elevated liver enzymes, this did not correlate with increased respiratory problems.

- Common symptoms included fever, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, cough, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
- Elevated ALT (27.8%) and AST (38.9%) were observed; direct bilirubin was raised in icteric cases. No significant relationship was found between pulmonary lesions and abnormal liver enzymes.
Conclusions:
- Severe clinical GI symptoms were not observed in pediatric COVID-19 patients.
- Increased liver enzymes in children with COVID-19 did not correlate with more severe respiratory involvement.
