Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common procedure for knee osteoarthritis.
  • The impact of TKA on functional recovery, specifically ambulation and balance, requires detailed investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively assess the functional recovery of lower limb ambulation and balance post-TKA.
  • To evaluate changes in walking and standing balance at various time points after surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 137 patients (osteoarthritis) undergoing primary TKA was studied.
  • Ambulation was measured using the 3m Timed Up and Go (TUG) test; balance was assessed via one-leg standing time (ST).
  • Functional assessments were conducted preoperatively and at 2 weeks, discharge, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, analyzed with ANOVA.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in TUG test and ST were observed by 3 months post-TKA.
  • No further statistically significant improvements in ambulation or balance were noted between 3 and 12 months postoperatively.

Conclusions:

  • TKA effectively restores lower limb ambulation and balance, with maximal benefits achieved by 3 months.
  • Rehabilitation efforts should focus on achieving functional gains within the initial 3 months following TKA.
