    Background:

    • Primary malignant lymphoma cutis presents as dermal or hypodermal lesions.
    • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the histopathologic diagnosis for these skin lymphomas.
    • Some cases are associated with a poor prognosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the clinical presentation and prognosis of primary malignant lymphoma cutis.
    • To compare the prognosis of primary cutaneous lymphoma with established staging systems.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 16 patients diagnosed with primary malignant lymphoma cutis between 1934 and 1975.
    • Histopathologic diagnosis of diffuse non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
    • Evaluation of lesion characteristics (purplish, firm nodules, tumours, plaques).

    Main Results:

    • All 16 patients had histopathologic diagnosis of diffuse non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
    • 12 patients had lymphomas considered to have a prognostically bad outlook.
    • Despite some poor prognostic indicators, the overall prognosis was more favorable than expected.

    Conclusions:

    • Primary malignant lymphoma cutis has a more favorable prognosis than suggested by advanced staging.
    • The Rye clinical staging classification may overestimate the severity of localized extranodal lymphoma cutis.
    • Further research into optimal staging and treatment for primary cutaneous lymphomas is warranted.
