Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

3.8K
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System

3.7K
The female reproductive system can be affected by several disorders, including Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), endometriosis, and various forms of cancer. PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...

Menopause01:28

Menopause

3.4K
Menopause, a natural biological process marking the end of a woman's fertility, typically occurs between the fifth and sixth decade of life. This phase is characterized by the exhaustion of the ovarian follicle pool, leading to less responsive ovaries despite the high levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). The consequential decrease in estrogen production results in symptoms like hot flashes, heavy sweating, headaches, hair loss, muscle pains, vaginal...

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

11.6K
Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Genital01:23

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Genital

1.4K
The genital stage is the final phase of Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosexual development, beginning at puberty, around age 12. During this stage, sexual energy shifts from self-focused interests to external individuals, marking the development of mature adult sexuality. Freud saw this phase as a time of sexual reawakening, with desires directed toward others outside the family. A healthy transition into this stage, according to Freud, signifies the emergence of two key aspects of adult...

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gynecology
  • Sexual Health

Background:

  • Cervical cancer treatment can significantly impact women's quality of life.
  • Sexual health is a crucial component of overall well-being following cancer therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize sociodemographic, clinical, and sexual life aspects of women post-cervical cancer treatment.
  • To identify the prevalence and factors associated with sexual dysfunction in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 46 women aged 18+ who completed cervical cancer treatment.
  • Utilized a questionnaire for sociodemographic/clinical data and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) to assess sexual function (score ≤26 indicated dysfunction).
  • Descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney/chi-square/Fisher's exact tests were employed for analysis.

Main Results:

  • 15 women (32.61%) engaged in sexual activity post-treatment.
  • Eight women (17.39%) showed indications of sexual dysfunction (mean FSFI score 21.66 ± 7.06).
  • Treatment type (p=0.03), radiotherapy (p=0.01), and disease stage (p=0.02) significantly influenced sexual function. Lubrication (p=0.03) and pain (p=0.04) were the most affected FSFI domains.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual dysfunction is a prevalent issue among women treated for cervical cancer.
  • The identified sexual dysfunction negatively affects the quality of life for these women.
  • Understanding these impacts is crucial for developing targeted supportive care strategies.
