Industrial nitrogen oxides (NOx) removal is achieved using yellow phosphorus (P4) and red mud. This composite absorbent efficiently converts NOx into harmless nitrates, reaching a 99.3% removal rate.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Chemistry
- Industrial Emissions Control
- Catalysis
Background:
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are major industrial pollutants contributing to environmental issues.
- Existing NOx removal methods often face challenges with efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Developing novel absorbents is crucial for effective industrial emission control.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy of a novel composite absorbent for industrial NOx removal.
- To optimize the denitration process using yellow phosphorus (P4) emulsion and red mud slurry.
- To elucidate the reaction mechanism of NOx conversion.
Main Methods:
- Utilized yellow phosphorus (P4) emulsion and red mud slurry as a composite absorbent.
- Investigated single factors influencing denitration efficiency, including P4 concentration, temperature, stirring, gas flow rate, O2 content, and red mud ratio.
- Employed Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for process parameter optimization.
Main Results:
- Achieved a high NOx removal rate of 99.3% under optimized conditions.
- Yellow phosphorus (P4) stimulated ozone (O3) formation, facilitating NO oxidation.
- Red mud acted as a pH buffer, enhancing NOx absorption.
- NOx was converted to water-soluble NO2- and NO3-, while P4 transformed into PO43-.
Conclusions:
- The composite absorbent of yellow phosphorus (P4) and red mud is highly effective for industrial NOx removal.
- Process optimization via RSM significantly enhanced denitration efficiency.
- The study provides insights into the reaction mechanism for NOx abatement.
