Muscles of the Shoulder01:23

Muscles of the Shoulder

8.2K
The muscles surrounding the shoulder girdle, including the clavicle and scapula, primarily stabilize the scapula. This stable base allows other muscles to move the humerus effectively. Scapular movements often mirror those of the humerus and extend its range of motion. For instance, raising the arm above the head would not be feasible without simultaneous upward rotation of the scapula.
Anterior Thoracic Muscles
The anterior thoracic muscles include the serratus anterior, subclavius, and...

Summary

Shoulder arthroplasty updates show a shift towards total shoulder arthroplasties and reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) for complex cases. Modern implants and planning improve outcomes for osteoarthritis and cuff tears.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Shoulder arthroplasty treats osteoarthritis, cuff tear arthropathy, and fractures.
  • Rotator cuff integrity influences implant choice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an update on shoulder arthroplasty indications and trends.
  • To highlight advancements in implant design and surgical planning.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current indications for anatomical and reverse shoulder arthroplasty.
  • Analysis of trends in prosthesis usage.
  • Discussion of modern implant capabilities and preoperative planning.

Main Results:

  • Anatomical shoulder arthroplasty is preferred for intact rotator cuffs.
  • Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is increasingly used, accounting for ~80% of procedures.
  • Modern implants allow for conversion from anatomical to reverse configurations.

Conclusions:

  • Improved understanding of pathology, implant design, and 3D planning enhance shoulder arthroplasty outcomes.
  • RSA is the dominant form of shoulder prosthesis for specific complex conditions.
