Tumor Progression02:07

Tumor Progression

6.9K
Tumor progression is a phenomenon where the pre-formed tumor acquires successive mutations to become clinically more aggressive and malignant. In the 1950s, Foulds first described the stepwise progression of cancer cells through successive stages.
Colon cancer is one of the best-documented examples of tumor progression. Early mutation in the APC gene in colon cells causes a small growth on the colon wall called a polyp. With time, this polyp grows into a benign, pre-cancerous tumor. Further...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare neoplasm characterized by a proliferation of myofibroblastic spindle cells and inflammatory infiltrates.
  • Due to its rarity, IMT is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of nodules and masses, leading to underdiagnosis.

Observation:

  • A case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is presented in a 3-year-old female patient.
  • The tumor exhibited the characteristic histological features of IMT, including spindle cells and inflammatory cells.

Findings:

  • The diagnosis of IMT was confirmed through histopathological examination.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering IMT in the differential diagnosis, even in pediatric patients with unusual presentations.

Implications:

  • Increased awareness and recognition of IMT are crucial for timely diagnosis and appropriate management.
  • Further research into the pathogenesis and treatment of IMT may improve outcomes for affected individuals.
