Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether spatially nonlocal, global conflict can drive binocular rivalry suppression.
  • To differentiate the effects of local contour conflict from global gestalt conflict on perceptual suppression.

Main Methods:

  • Participants viewed grids of elements (crosses/plusses) with constant local contour conflict.
  • Global conflict was manipulated by presenting elements with shared or different motion trajectories.
  • Perceptual disappearances of elements were recorded and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Perceptual disappearances were more frequent when global conflict (different motions) was high compared to shared motion.
  • This effect could not be attributed to differences in local contour conflict.
  • In the different motions condition, multiple elements of the same gestalt disappeared together, unlike in the shared motion condition.

Conclusions:

  • Binocular rivalry suppression is influenced by global gestalt, not solely local interocular conflict.
  • Inhibition during rivalry depends on how local elements contribute to a larger perceived structure.
  • These findings suggest a more complex interplay between local and global factors in visual perception.
