Background:

  • Histiocytic diseases are rarely documented in feline patients.
  • Oral masses in cats can present with varied clinical signs, including dysphonia and chewing difficulties.

Observation:

  • A 15-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented with dysphonia and difficulty chewing, indicative of an oral mass.
  • Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed histiocytic sarcoma of the caudal soft palate.
  • Imaging revealed a cranial soft tissue mass, with chemotherapy initiated post-cytoreductive surgery.

Findings:

  • The feline patient developed suspected pancreatitis, leading to chemotherapy discontinuation and supportive care.
  • Recurrence of dysphonia was noted three months post-surgery, suggesting local disease progression.
  • The patient was euthanized six months after diagnosis due to progressive disease.

Implications:

  • Histiocytic sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of feline oral masses, particularly those with pleomorphic and poorly differentiated histopathology.
  • Immunohistochemistry is recommended for confirming the cell line origin in suspected feline histiocytic sarcoma cases.
  • This report highlights the importance of considering rare differentials in feline oral oncology.
