Dermatomyositis and polymyositis patients show a higher prevalence of thyroid dysfunction, specifically hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Regular thyroid screening is recommended for individuals with these autoimmune conditions.
Area of Science:
- Rheumatology
- Endocrinology
- Autoimmune Diseases
Background:
- Dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) are rare autoimmune disorders.
- An association with dysthyroidism (thyroid dysfunction) has been occasionally suggested but not definitively proven.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of dysthyroidism in patients diagnosed with DM or PM.
- To analyze the association between DM/PM and thyroid dysfunction.
Main Methods:
- A nationwide case-control study utilized data from 2085 DM/PM patients and 10,193 matched controls (2000-2018).
- Univariate, multivariate logistic regression, and survival analyses were performed to assess the link between dysthyroidism and PM/DM.
Main Results:
- Hypothyroidism was significantly more prevalent in DM/PM patients (11.2%) compared to controls (8.4%).
- Hyperthyroidism was also significantly higher in cases (1.9%) versus controls (1.2%).
- Multivariate analysis confirmed significant associations of both DM and PM with hypothyroidism, and DM with hyperthyroidism.
Conclusions:
- The study establishes a significant link between DM/PM and thyroid dysfunction.
- Physicians should consider regular thyroid function screening for patients with DM or PM.

Papillary Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.

The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen...
