Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. Background:

Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects one in three women in the US.
Medical curricula offer limited training on responding to IPV.
There is a critical need for enhanced medical education on IPV.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of a learning intervention on medical students' ability to recognize and address IPV.
To evaluate changes in student comfort and preparedness in handling IPV cases.
To determine the effectiveness of a standardized patient session in IPV education.

Main Methods:

A learning intervention and standardized patient session were conducted.
Medical students completed pre- and post-session surveys assessing comfort and knowledge related to IPV.
Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test compared pre- and post-intervention scores.

Main Results:

Significant increases were observed in students' comfort recognizing signs of IPV (p < 0.01).
Student comfort in asking patients about IPV and knowledge of resources improved significantly (p < 0.01).
Preparedness for trauma-informed care showed improvement, though not statistically significant (ns).

Conclusions:

The learning intervention effectively increased medical student preparedness and comfort in addressing IPV.
The module covers essential topics often missing from standard medical education.
This IPV training module is adaptable for integration into various medical school curricula.
