This study refined key performance indicators (KPIs) for a pharmacy school, identifying 35 essential measures through a Delphi consensus technique to enhance programmatic assessment and focus efforts effectively.
Area of Science:
- Health Professions Education
- Academic Program Assessment
Background:
- The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy sought to optimize its programmatic assessment.
- A large number of initial key performance indicators (KPIs) required refinement to identify the most critical measures.
Purpose of the Study:
- To refine the school's key performance indicators (KPIs) for improved programmatic assessment.
- To focus on the most impactful measures for evaluating school performance.
Main Methods:
- A three-round Delphi consensus technique was employed, involving faculty and staff.
- Participants rated 56 initial KPIs (excluding 9 university-mandated ones) as essential or non-essential for quality assessment.
- Consensus thresholds were set at ≥90% (Round 1), ≥80% (Round 2), and ≥75% (Round 3).
Main Results:
- 35 out of 88 assessed KPIs achieved consensus as essential (39.8%).
- 3 out of 88 assessed KPIs achieved consensus as non-essential (3.4%).
- Consensus varied significantly across the 10 modules, with 'Student Experience and Success' (66.7%) and 'Faculty Experience and Success' (62.5%) showing higher agreement.
Conclusions:
- A refined set of 35 essential KPIs, plus 9 university-mandated KPIs, totaling 44, were identified.
- The Delphi process successfully engaged faculty and staff in KPI selection.
- This initiative improved the focus and effectiveness of programmatic assessment at the school.
