Peripheral Artery Disease V: Postoperative Nursing Management

148
During the postoperative period, it is crucial to focus on maintaining circulation, identifying and managing potential complications, and planning for discharge.Nursing AssessmentVital signs monitoring: Regularly monitor vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature, to detect early signs of complications such as bleeding and infection.Circulation assessment: Monitor pulses, perform Doppler assessments, and check capillary refill, color, temperature, and...

Skin Cancer01:30

Skin Cancer

5.4K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease V: Surgical Management

306
Surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are essential in managing symptoms and addressing complications. The selection of surgical procedures is contingent upon the specific conditions and complications that stem from these illnesses.

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

315
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

3.7K
Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Summary

Successful weight loss after bariatric surgery significantly improves skin conditions like keratosis pilaris and pebble fingers. However, monitoring vitamin B12 levels is crucial for patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Metabolic Surgery
  • Clinical Nutrition

Background:

  • Skin manifestations are common in morbid obesity and can change after bariatric surgery (BaS).
  • Limited data exists on specific skin findings exclusively in post-BaS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between successful weight loss post-BaS and the prevalence of specific cutaneous abnormalities.
  • To evaluate metabolic and biochemical changes in relation to weight loss success after BaS.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy post-BaS patients were assessed for cutaneous abnormalities.
  • Patients were categorized into successful (>=50% excessive body weight loss) and non-successful (<50% EBWL) weight loss groups.
  • Pre- and post-surgery laboratory values were compared.

Main Results:

  • Successful weight loss was linked to a lower prevalence of acanthosis nigricans, keratosis pilaris (KP), and pebble fingers.
  • Higher alopecia prevalence was noted in the successful group.
  • Successful weight loss correlated with improved metabolic profiles, including decreased glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, and liver enzymes, but also a decrease in vitamin B12.

Conclusions:

  • Bariatric surgery-induced weight loss improves metabolic profiles and certain skin conditions.
  • Successful weight reduction leads to better dermatological outcomes.
  • Nutritional monitoring and supplementation may be necessary post-surgery.
