Individuals with schizophrenia show heightened sensitivity to recent visual information, indicated by stronger tilt aftereffects. This overadaptation at cortical levels correlates with negative symptoms in persons with schizophrenia.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychology
- Visual Perception
Background:
- Schizophrenia is associated with difficulties in using temporal context and past experiences for sensory interpretation.
- Visual aftereffects, such as tilt aftereffects and negative afterimages, are valuable tools for probing how prior visual experience influences current perception.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate how prior visual experience shapes perception in individuals with schizophrenia (PSZ) compared to healthy controls (HC).
- To examine neural adaptation mechanisms in the visual system of PSZ using visual aftereffects.
Main Methods:
- Measured tilt aftereffects and negative afterimages in PSZ (n=36) and HC (n=22).
- Tilt aftereffects reflect cortical adaptation of orientation-coding neurons; negative afterimages reflect subcortical/retinal adaptation of luminance-coding cells.
Main Results:
- Persons with schizophrenia exhibited significantly stronger tilt aftereffects than healthy controls.
- No significant difference in negative afterimages was found between PSZ and HC.
- Stronger tilt aftereffects in PSZ were positively correlated with the severity of negative symptoms.
Conclusions:
- Schizophrenia is characterized by enhanced visual adaptation at cortical levels, suggesting an oversensitivity to recent environmental regularities.
- This cortical overadaptation, but not subcortical, is linked to negative symptoms in schizophrenia.
- Findings highlight altered visual processing and adaptation in schizophrenia, impacting perception of the environment.
