Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

710
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Summary

The Developmental Check-In (DCI) effectively screens young children for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), especially in underserved populations. This visually-based tool shows promise for identifying ASD in children with limited English or low literacy.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric developmental screening
  • Autism spectrum disorder diagnostics
  • Health equity in early identification

Background:

  • Persistent disparities in early autism spectrum disorder (ASD) identification affect minority and low-income children.
  • Parental literacy and maternal education levels may exacerbate these disparities.
  • The Developmental Check-In (DCI) is a visually-based screening tool designed to minimize literacy demands.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the DCI in an unselected, general sample of young, underserved children.
  • To assess the DCI's performance across diverse demographic groups.
  • To determine the DCI's utility in reducing barriers to early ASD identification.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 624 children aged 24-60 months from Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
  • Parents completed the DCI, Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised with Follow-Up, and Social Communication Questionnaire.
  • Children with positive screens on any measure received ASD evaluation; negative screens on two measures indicated non-ASD.

Main Results:

  • The DCI demonstrated good discriminative power for ASD versus non-ASD (AUC = 0.80).
  • Performance was consistent across age groups, genders, maternal education levels, primary languages, and ethnic/racial groups.
  • 24 out of 26 DCI items effectively discriminated between ASD and non-ASD.

Conclusions:

  • The DCI is a valuable tool for screening autism spectrum disorder in young, underserved children.
  • It shows particular promise for children with low literacy or limited English proficiency.
  • The DCI can help mitigate disparities in early ASD identification.
