Summary

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) intravenously administered to 100 asthma patients did not consistently cause bronchodilation. Most patients showed no significant improvement in forced expiratory volume (FEV) after ASA administration.

Background:

  • Some asthmatic individuals experience bronchodilation upon administration of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID).
  • The precise mechanisms underlying ASA-induced bronchodilation in asthma remain incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the bronchodilatory effects of intravenous acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in asthma patients without a history of ASA intolerance.
  • To assess the reproducibility of any observed bronchodilatory response.

Main Methods:

  • Intravenous administration of 750 mg ASA to 100 asthmatic patients.
  • Serial measurement of forced expiratory volume (FEV) at multiple time points post-administration.
  • Repeat testing after one week for patients exhibiting a significant FEV increase.

Main Results:

  • The majority of patients (64/100) showed no functional variations in FEV.
  • A minority of patients (14/100) demonstrated a less than 20% variation in FEV.
  • Only 2 patients confirmed bronchodilation upon repeat testing after one week.

Conclusions:

  • Intravenous ASA administration does not consistently induce significant bronchodilation in most asthma patients without prior ASA intolerance.
  • The observed bronchodilatory effect, when present, may not be consistently reproducible.
  • Asthma models involving ASA response warrant further investigation into mediator roles.
