Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Pediatric Radiology

Background:

  • Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, benign, expansile bone lesions.
  • Distal femoral metaphyseal ABCs are uncommon in young children.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for optimal outcomes.

Observation:

  • A three-year-old child presented with an aneurysmal bone cyst.
  • The lesion was located in the right distal femoral metaphysis.
  • The cyst was causing significant bone expansion and pain.

Findings:

  • Thorough curettage of the aneurysmal bone cyst was performed.
  • The cyst cavity was packed with crushed cortical bone autograft.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of an aneurysmal bone cyst.

Implications:

  • Surgical intervention, including curettage and bone grafting, can effectively treat pediatric ABCs.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare bone lesions in the differential diagnosis of pediatric bone pain.
  • Further research into the etiology and optimal management of ABCs in children is warranted.
