This study introduces a new model for selecting safety key performance indicators (KPIs) to effectively assess organizational safety management systems, focusing on active and operational metrics for construction industries.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health and Safety
- Management Systems Engineering
- Performance Measurement
Background:
- Health and safety performance measurements inform organizational strategy.
- Existing measurements may not adequately reflect real-time safety status.
Purpose of the Study:
- Develop a model for determining and selecting safety key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Enhance the assessment of safety management systems.
Main Methods:
- A six-step model development process.
- Utilized the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Bayesian Network (BN) techniques for KPI selection.
- Defined 116 structural and operational indicators based on OHSAS 18001.
Main Results:
- Selected 19 structural, 27 operational, and 33 active KPIs.
- The selected KPIs are designed to be more responsive to performance changes.
Conclusions:
- Leading performance indicators (LPIs) are influenced by organizational, managerial, and operational factors.
- Active and operational LPIs are crucial for detecting short-term safety performance changes.
- The developed model emphasizes active indicators for improved safety monitoring, particularly in construction.
