Summary

Invasive fungal infections caused by Scopulariopsis can occur after intensive chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant. These infections are difficult to treat and can be fatal, even with standard antifungal therapies.

Background:

  • Opportunistic fungal infections are a known risk for immunocompromised patients, particularly those undergoing intensive chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation.
  • Standard antifungal treatments are often effective against common fungal pathogens in these patient populations.

Observation:

  • Two cases of invasive infections caused by the saprophytic fungus Scopulariopsis were observed in patients.
  • These infections occurred in the context of intensive chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation.

Findings:

  • The fungal disease caused by Scopulariopsis persisted in both patients despite surgical removal of the infected area and extended treatment with conventional antifungal agents.
  • Invasive Scopulariopsis infection contributed to the mortality of one of the two patients.
