Bone Formation by Endochondral Ossification01:24

Bone Formation by Endochondral Ossification

7.4K
Bone formation, or ossification, begins around the sixth to seventh week of embryonic development. Most bones develop from a cartilaginous template through the process of endochondral ossification. Cartilage formation begins when clusters of mesenchymal cells differentiate into chondrocytes. These chondrocytes proliferate rapidly and secrete an extracellular matrix that becomes encased in a membrane called the perichondrium. The resulting cartilage model provides a template that resembles the...

Bone Formation by Intramembranous Ossification

9.3K
Intramembranous ossification is one of the two processes involved in the development of bones within an embryo. The flat bones of the face, most of the cranial bones, and the clavicles are formed via this process. During intramembranous ossification, the bones develop directly from sheets of undifferentiated mesenchymal connective tissue.
The process begins when mesenchymal cells in the embryonic skeleton gather together and differentiate into osteogenic cells, which then develop into ...

Summary

Pachydermodactyly (PDD) treatment with steroid injections led to unexpected heterotopic ossification. This case highlights a new potential complication of local steroid injections, previously unlinked to PDD.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Orthopedics
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Pachydermodactyly (PDD) is a rare, benign condition causing progressive swelling of hand phalangeal joints.
  • Local steroid injections are a common treatment for PDD symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 37-year-old man with PDD received local steroid injections for joint swelling.
  • Following treatment, the patient developed heterotopic ossification and para-articular calcifications at the injection sites.

Findings:

  • Heterotopic ossification is not a known complication of Pachydermodactyly.
  • This is the first reported instance of heterotopic ossification occurring after local steroid injection.

Implications:

  • This case suggests a novel potential complication associated with local steroid injections.
  • Further investigation is warranted to understand the mechanism and incidence of this adverse event.
