Area of Science:

  • Perinatology
  • Pediatric Nephrology
  • Fetal Medicine

Background:

  • Fetal bladder outlet obstruction (FBOO) poses risks to renal development.
  • Accurate prediction of fetal renal function is crucial for management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate ultrasound findings and fetal urinary electrolytes with outcomes in FBOO.
  • To evaluate the prognostic value of fetal urinary electrolytes for renal dysplasia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 8 cases with FBOO.
  • Correlation of prenatal ultrasound, urinary electrolyte levels, and postnatal/postmortem findings.

Main Results:

  • One fetus with predicted normal renal function showed renal dysplasia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Five of six fetuses predicted with poor renal function had renal dysplasia.
  • Conclusions:

    • Fetal urinary electrolytes show potential but require further validation.
    • The utility of fetal urinary electrolytes for predicting renal dysplasia in FBOO needs clarification.
