Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.
  • To explore the role of chronic oral infections in the development of heart conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted involving 146 participants (73 with CVD, 73 healthy controls).
  • Data was collected via questionnaire-based interviews at a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.
  • Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.

Main Results:

  • A significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis was observed in patients with cardiovascular disease (65.75%) compared to healthy controls (21.91%) (p<0.001).
  • Among cardiovascular disease patients, 48 (65.75%) had periodontitis, while 25 (34.25%) did not.
  • Among controls, 16 (21.91%) had periodontitis, and 57 (78.08%) did not.

Conclusions:

  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the causal mechanisms and inform clinical practice.
