The Cochlea

The cochlea is a coiled structure in the inner ear that contains hair cells—the sensory receptors of the auditory system. Sound waves are transmitted to the cochlea by small bones attached to the eardrum called the ossicles, which vibrate the oval window that leads to the inner ear. This causes fluid in the chambers of the cochlea to move, vibrating the basilar membrane.

Summary

Cochlear implantation can significantly reduce tinnitus perception in eligible patients. This study supports cochlear implants as a viable treatment option for tinnitus in individuals with hearing loss.

  • To review scientific literature for evidence that cochlear implants improve tinnitus perception in eligible patients.
  • To assess the impact of cochlear implantation on tinnitus in patients with hearing loss.

  • A systematic literature search identified 140 articles from databases and 20 from gray literature.
  • Eligibility criteria were defined using the PICOS strategy.
  • Selected studies underwent qualitative synthesis and critical appraisal using Joanna Briggs Institute checklists.

Main Results:

  • Eleven articles were fully reviewed, with 6 selected for meta-analysis.
  • The meta-analysis included a total of 136 patients with tinnitus eligible for cochlear implantation.

Conclusions:

  • Cochlear implantation is a feasible option for reducing tinnitus perception.
  • This offers a new therapeutic avenue for tinnitus management in hearing-impaired individuals considering cochlear implants.
