Summary

Facial cue interpretation across cultures is challenging. High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) targeting the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) can improve cross-cultural mind-reading abilities, especially for those with less intergroup contact.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if stimulating the dmPFC using high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) can enhance cross-cultural mind-reading.
  • To determine the specificity of HD-tDCS effects on the dmPFC for this cognitive function.

Main Methods:

  • 52 Singaporeans performed the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) and received HD-tDCS targeting either the dmPFC or a control site (rTPJ) in a double-blinded, crossover design.
  • Participant's contact with Caucasians was assessed as a potential moderator.
  • A comparison group of 52 Caucasians completed the RMET under sham-tDCS.

Main Results:

  • A cross-cultural disadvantage in RMET performance was observed in Singaporeans, particularly those with less contact with Caucasians.
  • HD-tDCS applied to the dmPFC significantly improved RMET performance in participants with lower intergroup contact.
  • No significant effects were found for rTPJ stimulation or a control task, indicating task and site specificity.

Conclusions:

  • Focal electrical stimulation of the dmPFC selectively enhances cross-cultural Theory of Mind (ToM) inference from facial cues.
  • HD-tDCS to the dmPFC can mitigate the cross-cultural disadvantage in mind-reading, particularly for individuals with limited cross-cultural exposure.
  • This finding has implications for improving social cognition in diverse global interactions.
