Antimicrobial peptides, specifically alpha defensins, are elevated in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. Higher alpha defensin levels correlate with lung involvement, suggesting a role in SSc pathogenesis.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Rheumatology
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease with poorly understood mechanisms.
- Associations between antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and other fibrotic and autoimmune conditions exist.
- The role of AMPs in SSc pathogenesis remains uninvestigated.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate serum levels of AMPs in SSc patients.
- To explore the association between AMPs and SSc disease characteristics.
Main Methods:
- Serum AMP levels were measured in 42 SSc patients and 38 healthy controls.
- SSc patient data included disease subset, autoantibodies, inflammatory markers (ESR, CRP), skin score, and organ involvement (lung, kidney, GI).
- Statistical analyses were performed to correlate AMP levels with clinical parameters.
Main Results:
- Serum alpha defensin levels were significantly higher in SSc patients compared to controls (p=0.02).
- No significant differences were found for beta-1 and beta-2 defensins.
- Elevated alpha defensin levels correlated with interstitial lung disease (p=0.04) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (r=0.34).
Conclusions:
- Alpha defensin levels are increased in systemic sclerosis.
- Elevated alpha defensins are associated with lung involvement in SSc.
- Alpha defensins may play a role in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis.
