Background:

  • Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a growing global health concern, particularly in India.
  • Myocardial infarction (MI), a common form of CHD, shows increasing incidence and severity among young individuals in Kerala, India.
  • Research on psychological factors linked to MI in India is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between Type D personality and myocardial infarction (MI) in the Indian population.
  • To assess the role of psychological distress in the etiology of MI among younger individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted with 150 MI patients and 150 matched controls.
  • Participants were recruited from a tertiary care hospital in Trivandrum, Kerala, between September 2016 and August 2017.
  • Convenience sampling was employed for participant selection.

Main Results:

  • 50.7% of MI patients exhibited Type D personality traits, compared to 33.3% of controls.
  • Multivariate logistic regression revealed a significant positive association between Type D personality and MI (OR = 4.14, P = 0.003).
  • This association remained statistically significant after adjusting for potential confounders.

Conclusions:

  • Type D personality is a significant risk factor for myocardial infarction (MI).
  • Psychological interventions targeting Type D personality may aid in MI prevention, especially among younger populations in India.
