Insights

Feijoa fruit extract protects against cadmium chloride-induced testicular damage by improving sperm quality and restoring reproductive hormone levels. This study highlights Feijoa

Area of Science:

  • Toxicology
  • Reproductive Biology
  • Phytochemistry

Background:

  • Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) is a toxic heavy metal known to induce testicular injury.
  • Disruption of the pituitary-gonadal axis and impaired reproductive function are significant concerns associated with cadmium exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the protective effects of Feijoa fruit extract against CdCl2-induced testicular damage.
  • To evaluate the impact of Feijoa extract on the pituitary-gonadal axis and reproductive parameters in rats.

Main Methods:

  • Adult male Wistar rats were exposed to CdCl2 and/or treated with Feijoa fruit extract.
  • Hormone levels (LH, FSH, prolactin, testosterone), sperm parameters (count, morphology, motility, viability), and testicular histology were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Feijoa fruit extract administration significantly ameliorated CdCl2-induced negative effects on sperm parameters.
  • Treatment with Feijoa extract restored normal levels of LH, FSH, prolactin, and testosterone.
  • Histological examination revealed improved testicular tissue structure in rats treated with Feijoa extract.

Conclusions:

  • Feijoa fruit extract demonstrates significant protective potential against CdCl2-induced testicular toxicity.
  • Feijoa extract can mitigate the adverse effects of cadmium on testicular tissue and the reproductive endocrine system.
