    Area of Science:

    • Optical Wireless Communications
    • Atmospheric Optics
    • Wireless Communication Systems

    Background:

    • Sandstorms significantly degrade visibility, impacting outdoor optical wireless communications (OWC).
    • Optical Camera Communications (OCC) offer a potential solution, but their performance during adverse weather is not well understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To experimentally assess the impact of a real sandstorm on optical camera communications (OCC) links.
    • To evaluate the feasibility of using low-cost, telescope-based camera setups for OWC in dusty conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Two OCC links (100m and 200m) were established using commercial LEDs and a telescope-based camera.
    • On-off keying modulation was employed, and camera amplifier gain was tuned to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
    • Performance was evaluated during a real sandstorm event.

    Main Results:

    • Data rates of 1035 bps (9.14⋅10-5 error probability) at 100m and 630 bps (4.1⋅10-3 error probability) at 200m were achieved.
    • Signal-to-noise ratio was improved by up to 9 dB through amplifier gain tuning.
    • Sandstorm-induced scattering unexpectedly increased the region of interest by 33%, enhancing OCC data rates compared to clear-air conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • OCC links demonstrate resilience and even potential benefits from sandstorm-induced scattering, unlike traditional OWC systems.
    • Telescope-based OCC systems are viable for outdoor wireless communication, even in challenging atmospheric conditions like sandstorms.
    • Further research into optimizing OCC for diverse weather conditions is warranted.
