Although not a source of energy, cholesterol plays a significant role as a foundational structure for bile salts, steroid hormones, and vitamin D, as well as being a crucial component of plasma membranes. Summary

A single cryolipolysis session effectively reduced visceral adipose tissue in the abdomen by 15.6% after 12 weeks. This noninvasive treatment also showed trends in reducing overall body fat and waist circumference.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of a single unilateral cryolipolysis session on visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue over 12 weeks.
  • To compare treated and untreated abdominal areas using computed tomography.

Main Methods:

  • A split-body trial involving 15 participants (9 women).
  • Computed tomography scans measured abdominal adipose tissue cross-sectional areas before and 12 weeks after treatment.
  • Waist circumference and body fat percentage were measured at baseline, 6, and 12 weeks.

Main Results:

  • Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) on the treated side significantly decreased by 15.6% (6.8 cm2; P = 0.003).
