    Summary

We developed a tunable gear-shaped plasmonic nanostructure with high refractive index (RI) sensitivity. This novel design achieves a best sensitivity of 1044 nm/RIU, ideal for tunable sensors.

    Area of Science:

    • Plasmonics
    • Nanotechnology
    • Optical Sensors

    Background:

    • Plasmonic nanostructures are crucial for sensing applications due to their unique optical properties.
    • Developing nanostructures with tunable parameters enhances sensor design flexibility and performance.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce a novel gear-shaped plasmonic nanostructure with tunable geometric parameters.
    • To theoretically analyze the refractive index (RI) sensitivity of this nanostructure for sensing applications.

    Main Methods:

    • Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method was employed for theoretical analysis.
    • The reflection spectrum was simulated across a refractive index range of 1.0 to 1.44.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed gear-shaped nanostructure exhibits high RI sensitivity.
    • A maximum sensitivity of 1044 nm/RIU was achieved.
    • Resonance wavelength demonstrated independence from polarization angle for structures with numerous teeth.

    Conclusions:

    • The tunable gear-shaped plasmonic nanostructure offers excellent RI sensitivity.
    • This design is suitable for developing advanced tunable sensors for chemical and biomedical fields.
