Ultrasonography

7.1K
Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the body's internal structures. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, making it widely used in various medical fields. Ultrasonography is used to study heart function, blood flow in the neck or extremities, certain conditions such as gallbladder disease, and fetal growth and development.
During an ultrasonography procedure, a handheld device called...

Ultrasound I: Abdominal Ultrasonography

713
Introduction:
Abdominal ultrasonography, commonly known as abdominal ultrasound, is a vital, non-invasive medical imaging technique widely used in healthcare.
Procedure:
This diagnostic tool allows the clinician to visually inspect internal structures within the abdomen, including vital organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen.
The abdominal ultrasound process begins with applying a special gel to the patient's skin over the abdomen. This gel enhances the...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System II:Types of Echocardiography

479
Echocardiography plays a role in assessing cardiac health and detecting heart conditions, with various types providing critical insights for diagnosis and treatment.
Types of Echocardiography
Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE)
TTE is the most common type of echocardiogram which involves placing a transducer on the patient's chest, emitting sound waves to create heart images. TTE is invaluable for evaluating the heart's size, structure, and motion, making it particularly useful for...

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Breast ultrasound is crucial for breast cancer diagnosis.
  • Standardized diagnostic criteria for breast ultrasound are currently lacking.
  • Beginner sonographers require simplified diagnostic tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a simple diagnostic flowchart for breast ultrasound beginners.
  • To create a standardized approach based on Japanese recall criteria.
  • To improve diagnostic accuracy in early breast cancer detection.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter study involving 22 Japanese hospitals.
  • Evaluation of B-mode breast ultrasound images of 1045 solid masses.
  • Development of a novel diagnostic flowchart using multivariate analysis of significant findings.

Main Results:

  • Shape, margin, echogenic halo, mammary gland interface interruption, and depth width ratio were key distinguishing features.
  • The new flowchart demonstrated high sensitivity (0.95-0.97) and specificity (0.45) comparable to expert performance.
  • The flowchart effectively differentiated between benign and malignant breast masses.

Conclusions:

  • A simple, effective diagnostic flowchart for breast ultrasound has been developed.
  • The flowchart is expected to aid in the education and training of novice breast sonographers.
  • This tool aims to standardize breast cancer diagnosis using ultrasound.
