Background:

  • Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare, benign chronic inflammation of mesenteric adipose tissue.
  • Abdominal pain is the most common clinical presentation of MP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and characterize the ultrasound (US) features of mesenteric panniculitis.
  • To evaluate the correlation between US findings and CT-diagnosed MP.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 120 patients with MP diagnosed by CT or US over 9 years.
  • Analysis of abdominal US performed within 10 days prior to CT for correlation.

Main Results:

  • Ultrasound suggested MP in 53% of cases.
  • Characteristic US findings included increased mesenteric root fatty mass (98%), oval shape (94%), central location (91%), and increased echogenicity (95%).
  • Lateral bowel loop displacement (59%) and lymph node detection (55%) were also observed.

Conclusions:

  • Mesenteric panniculitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain.
  • Familiarity with US findings, including central abdominal compression, can improve MP detection during abdominal US examinations.
