Summary

Moderately early hospital discharge for healthy newborns is safe. Readmission rates were similar to those for infants with extended hospital stays, indicating no increased risk for early discharge.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety of moderately early hospital discharge for normal newborn infants.

  • Retrospective review of hospital charts for infants admitted to a well-baby nursery in 1985.
  • Comparison of readmission incidence within 6 weeks of birth between two cohorts: moderately early discharge (31 hours) and extended hospitalization (92 hours).

  • No significant difference in hospital readmission rates was observed between the moderately early discharge group (3.0%) and the extended hospitalization group (2.7%).
  • Maternal factors like age, financial status, and race did not predict infant readmission.

  • Moderately early neonatal hospital discharge does not lead to a higher incidence of rehospitalization within the first six weeks of life.
