Background:

  • COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a global pandemic affecting over 200 countries.
  • Brazil has experienced significant mortality, with over 140,000 recorded deaths.
  • Conflicting information and discussions persist regarding effective disease control measures, prevention, and treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the general knowledge of the Brazilian population regarding COVID-19.
  • To evaluate the ability of Brazilians to discern scientifically validated information about the pandemic.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from June to August 2020.
  • The survey covered basic COVID-19 aspects: symptoms, conduct, risk groups, prevention, transmission, and social distancing.
  • Participants (N=4180) were recruited via social media across all five Brazilian geopolitical regions.

Main Results:

  • Respondents achieved an average score of 86.59% on basic COVID-19 knowledge.
  • Significant associations (P<.001) were found between knowledge and region, education, age, sex, and social condition.

Conclusions:
